The Suttles Family Visits OBON SOCIETY
2025-10-17

Mr. and Mrs. Suttles and their granddaughter, Frankie.
OBON SOCIETY had another wonderful visit from the Suttles family, who drove down from Portland, Oregon, to personally deliver a flag brought back from WWII by Mr. Suttles’ father. We were honored to learn about his remarkable father, who helped establish the Uruma Shimpo newspaper in 1945 in Okinawa.
Joining them was their 11-year-old granddaughter, Frankie, who came to witness and learn about the flag being returned. We always cherish opportunities to speak with young people about OBON’s work. Frankie was a delight to talk with—though a bit shy, she showed genuine curiosity about the history of these flags and expressed hope that this one will soon return home.
Part of OBON SOCIETY’s mission is to help younger generations understand why these items are so meaningful to the families in Japan. It was a true pleasure hearing about the Suttles’ family history, and we deeply appreciate them taking the time to visit and share this special moment with us.
We were deeply moved to welcome the Suttles family, who hand-delivered a WWII flag brought home by Mr. Suttles’ father. Their granddaughter, Frankie, came to learn why these flags matter. Seeing the next generation embrace understanding and peace gives us so much hope.
