Mission/Vision
Mission and Vision Statements
Mission-
OBON SOCIETY cultivates healing and reconciliation by returning personal artifacts taken during World War ll back to families,
promoting cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect across generations.
Vision-
OBON SOCIETY envisions a future where compassion and understanding connect families and nations,
inspiring global unity through the respectful return of meaningful personal artifacts.
OBON SOCIETY fulfills its mission through three primary initiatives:
- Repatriation of Wartime Artifacts: We facilitate the return of Non-Biological Human Remains (NBHR), specifically Yosegaki Hinomaru flags, taken during World War ll, to their rightful families in Japan. This process provides closure and healing to those affected by the war.
- Creating Bonding Friendships: We encourage each donor to write a heartfelt personal message to the Japanese family when returning the Non-Biological Human Remains (NBHR). Including photos or sharing stories can add a meaningful touch to the gesture. Additionally, if the Japanese family is open to it, donors have the option to travel to Japan for a personal handover ceremony. This unique opportunity allows for a deeply moving and memorable exchange, fostering connection and understanding between both families.
- Peace Education: We actively participate in conferences, panel discussions, presentations, and both in-person and Zoom events to promote peace education. By sharing OBON SOCIETY's impactful stories, we aim to advance the reconciliation process across generations and cultures. Additionally, we engage with schools to inspire students and foster an understanding about the importance of healing and connection in building a more harmonious world.
